We are a small practice in Bristol making houses and small public buildings from timber, stone, brick and lime. Every project starts as a drawing by hand, and ends as somewhere people are glad to be.

The practice

How we work, in three notes.

Halden Rowe was founded in 2018 by Ada Halden and Tom Rowe. There are six of us, in one room above a timber yard.

  1. We start on site, not on screen.

    Every project begins with a day walking the ground and a measured survey by hand, before any software is opened.

  2. Fewer materials, used well.

    Timber, stone, brick and lime, chosen for how they will look in forty years, not on the day they are finished.

  3. Warm, and cheap to run.

    We design to Passivhaus principles as standard, whether or not a building is certified.
